Tucson, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas

Was habe ich also gemacht?
Roadtrip - Vol. 2

After riding with 20 km/h on my Bike the last days I am heading towards Tucson with about 1000 km/h on a plane. I'm not only ruining my CO2 balance but also looking forward to meet up with Lupita and Eva, that I know from my time in Spain. I'll also do another road trip with Mary Anne and there is much to tell you. But again: I try to focus on the most important things in order to not distract you from the great pictures (and with "great" I'm refering to the things in the pictures, not my ability to take them :D ).
So, what did I do?
  • I spent a couple of days in Tucson with Eva, Lupita and Nara and enjoyed the 30 degree celcius over there. The girls really tried hard to give my liver no rest after all this time on the bike without much alcohol and we had a lot of fun. Thanks for the short but very very nice time with you! ;)
  • I went to a real tailgate party with real americans on a real homecoming weekend and cheered for the Wildcats! You know, one of these small little university games with 56.000 people in the stadium and at least twice as much outside at the tailgate party (pictures 1-3).
  • I bought and played my new little guitalele.
  • I went to see the Grand Canyon with Mary Anne. I dont really know, what to tell you here. I just dont have the words for what I saw there. Just have a look at the pictures (photos 8 - 15)!
  • On the way back to San Diego, we stopped in Las Vegas. What a crazy and loud city in the middle of the desert. And Yes, I lost money gambling... but just 1,88 US$ :)
  • I spent the last days in the US in San Diego with Jen, Pat, Claire and Mary Anne. Thanks for your nice hospitality and the Nutella jar as a farewell present!

Day 49 - Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park

Bodie

Mono Lake

Alcatraz

San Francisco

Pictures for the World

Aufpassen sollte man allerdings, was die richtige Kleidungswahl angeht.
Thanks a lot!

Pictures for the World

San Francisco has been our base for the last couple of days, but now it's time to move and get back on the road. This time, we change the vehicle and decide to rent a car for a short road trip up to the mountains in the east of California. Together with Tiny Tim - that's the name of the small Toyota Yaris - we leave Frisco to get to the Yosemite National Park. Getting the car is already an adventure. But after only one BART train ride, quite a long walk through the airport of SF, another shuttle ride out of the city limits and only 30 more minutes of waiting, Firefly presents me this small car that was meant to be at least a Ford Focus. But whatever! I'm too tired to argue with them and I mean: there are four tires and a steering wheel, what else do I want?
I won't describe the trip in full details, but try to give you at least my (lasting) impressions. So much right at the beginning: Yosemite is really spectacular and all the waiting for the government shutdown to end was totally worth it. The National Park is gigantic, stunning and absolutely amazing.
But You should be well prepared regarding your tent and your clothes.  The temperatures during the day go up to 26 degree celsius and in the night and early mornings we were freezing with minus 5 degree and frost on our tent! I'm really glad I bought this new sleeping bag on this trip! :)
The mountains around El Capitan, Half Dome and all the hiking trails to the waterfalls (if they are not dry by now) fill our days here. We also experience what the big forest fires back in the mid summer did to this gorgeous spot. All over the place we see burned and black trunks and the big trees trying to recover where the flames left something alive. But right now, the danger seems under control and we can discover the park.
A couple of miles east of Yosemite our route leads us to Bodie. A ghost town from the times of the gold rush. Between 1870 and the late nineteenth century the town was roaring and up to 10.000 people lived here. Today it is silent and the remaining buildings put you back into the times of the Wild West. You only miss the tumbleweed to make it a perfect scenery. :)
Right next to it we spend the sunset at Mono Lake, which is an absolutely surreal place. The high salt and caulk concentration enabled these crazy pictures. And I promise: the color of the photos have not been photoshopped! :)
After four days this little intermezzo ends and I'm heading back to the airport to get Tiny Tim back to the car rental. The way back is even more complicated than the first way to get there, because of a BART strike. But so I am at least able to meet Lee on the bus my way back and he is so kind to invite me for lunch and gave me some very nice input for the rest of my journey. Nice meeting you Lee!
Back in San Fran we spend the days relaxing in the city, finally seeing real hippies, spending time in the waiting line for a really famous ice cream store and going out with Martin and Norma (his mother that just flew in to visit him). On Monday we are following in the footsteps of Al Capone and Robert Stroud ("The Birdman when we go on a trip to Alcatraz, the former prison on the rock just about 2 miles from downtown of the city.
Now it's already time to prepare for the continuation of the bike ride. After nine days off the road, we are ready for new adventures on the road heading south. Santa Barbara will probably be the next stop before LA.
