Day 64 - 1899,17 Miles - San Diego

Im Süden angekommen...

Nachdem wir uns zwei Tage lang in Palos Verdes bei Pat und Christa ausgeruht haben, stehen also nur noch gut 200 Kilometer auf dem Programm bis San Diego und damit praktisch bis zur mexikanischen Grenze. Die Strecke lässt sich prima in zwei gleichlange Tagesabschnitte teilen und verspricht vor allem eines: viel Großstadtverkehr. Fast 3 Stunden brauchen wir am Dienstag also, um nicht wirklich anmutenden Randbezirke von LA zu verlassen. Long Beach, Huntington Beach und Newport beanspruchen wirklich all unsere Nerven und es dauert fast bis Laguna Beach, bis wir wieder entspannt auf dem Pacific Coast Highway gen Süden radeln können ohne an jeder Straßenkreuzung an einer roten Ampel zu stehen. San Clemente ist das heutige Ziel. Laut unserem Buch gibt es dort einen Hiker/Biker Campground. Leider nur nach unserem Buch. Der nächste State Park ist ganze 9 Meilen entfernt und die wollen wir heute siche rnicht mehr fahren. Nach einer Minute beschließt der kompetente Ranger des State Beaches, uns für 6 US$ übernachten zu lassen. Na geht doch! Zudem wird es langsam Zeit für die Abschiede. Ein letztes Mal gemeinsames Kochen (lecker aus der Dose) mit Mary Anne, die in San Diego ihren Trip beenden wird.

Am Tag darauf treffen wir sogar Sara und Hanna ein letztes Mal, für die ebenfalls am Südzipfel der USA Endstation sein wird. Gemeinsam fahren wir über einen US Militär-Stützpunkt, der erstaunlicherweise Bestandteil unserer Route ist (Foto 7). Es war eine sehr lustige und schöne Zeit mit euch beiden! Ohne Sara und Hanna fahre ich mit Mary Anne weiter die letzten Kilometer bis San Diego.

Bis wir schließlich in dort ankommen ist es stockdunkel. Vorteil an solch späten Ankünften: wunderschöne Bilder bei der Fahrt in den Sonnenuntergang. Nachteil: im Dunkeln ist's nie so wirklich schön zu navigieren und angenehm ist das Fahren dann auch nicht. Aber mein selbst entwickeltes High-Tech Multifunktions Kontrollzentrum (Foto 12) erleichtert die Fahrt durch die Stadt wesentlich. Denn erstaunlicherweise funktioniert GPS überall, auch wenn man kein Internet hat. Am Tagesziel werden wir auch schon von Pat, Jen und Claire empfangen, die nicht nur Freunde von Mary Anne, sondern auch hervorragende Gastgeber sind. 

In den kommenden Tagen werde ich mein Ersatzteillager bis zum bersten füllen und intensiv die Route für Mexiko planen. Dort gibt es nämlich weder gute Karten mit Höhenprofilen noch Radläden, trinkbares Wasser an jeder Ecke oder Campgrounds alle paar Meilen. Da ist man besser vorbereitet.
Und da ich schon mal hier bin, werde ich einen kurzen Roadtrip nach Tucson, den Grand Canyon und Las Vegas einlegen, bevor es kommendes Wochenende ernst wird und ich über die Grenze rollen werde. Gibt schlimmeres, oder? ;)

Made it to the south....

After resting for two days in Palos Verdes at Pat and Christa's Place, there are only about 130 miles left of riding in the US and soon I will be on Mexican territory. The distance can perfectly be divided into two similar parts and the stages promise especially one thing: lots of traffic! We need almost 3 hours on Tuesday to get out of the suburbs of Los Angeles. Long Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport were really demanding. Not so much regarding the physical strain but the psychological effort. Always being focused, always paying attention on the cars and traffic signs. In Laguna Beach we can finally enjoy the ride again heading south on the Pacific Coast Highway without heaving to stop at every stop light.
San Clemente State Beach is our destination, because the book says there would be a hiker/biker site. It appears there is none. But fortunately we have to deal with a very nice park ranger and after a short phone call he lets us stay at the park for 6 US$ per person. Not a bad deal! :) It's also time for some farewells. A last camping dinner with Mary Anne (we even put delicious steak in our pasta sides!) because she will finish her trip in San Diego. The next day we also meet up again with Sara and Hanna who also finish here. Together we pedal through a military camp (picture 7) that somehow made it into our route. It was a wonderful time with you girls! Without Sara and Hanna but still with Mary Anne we finally ride towards San Diego. Until we get there it is completely dark. The advantage of such a ride into the sunset: beautiful pictures! The disadvantage: it's really hard to navigate in the darkness and it's also not a very nice feeling to ride when you are not as visible as during the day. But my self made control center (picture 12) leads us the way to our days destination. There Pat, Jen and Claire are already waiting for us. They are not just Mary Anne's friends but also very nice hosts! Thanks already for your hospitality!!
The next days, I will do a little Road trip to Tucson, the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas. I will also have to get prepared for the Mexican part of my trip. As there will be no nice maps with elevation profiles, bike shops, campgrounds or potable water for a long stretch of the trip , I'd better be prepared, right? :)
